When I moved here in 2015, I noticed from riding all over that I would pass cyclists from time to time on the same roads. Sometimes they would be just a mile or two apart. I would wonder if they got dropped or if they just didn't know each other. I know some people just prefer to ride alone, but I also know that it's safer to ride in groups. I was looking for a group to join myself.
There were a couple of groups in town. The Prairie Cycle Club and the Wildcard Cycling team. It seemed I didn't fit well with either of these groups. I liked to ride a bit faster and longer than most of the PCC groups and I wasn't as serious as some of the Wild Card riders. For about a year, I just rode mostly by myself and with a couple of friends that I had made.
One day, Tim and I started talking about an idea to create a new cycling club. The Midwest Cycling club. It was to be an all-inclusive club that would be free to join. Our goal was to get the cyclists in the area that wasn't already part of one of the other groups to join the MWCC and start riding together. We ended up with about 5 riders that showed interest. Three years later, we only had seven.
At this point, I really quit trying and we just continued on riding with our small group from time to time. This year, I had the idea to turn the MWCC website into more of a community page for all clubs and groups in the central Illinois area. This is my attempt to once again bring the community of cyclist together.
My hope is that cyclists from Prairie Cycle Club, Wild Card, Big Ring Cycling, Illini Cycling, Bloomington Cycle, and any other groups will join the MWC website and find it fun and useful. The site is built like a social media page. You can create a profile, share post, pictures, videos, and follow other cyclists. The best part, there no ads or politics allowed. It's all about cycling here.
The site will have information about group rides and events in and around the central Illinois area. A leader from each group or club will be a moderator for their own club’s forum where they can create content for their members. The sole purpose of this site is to bring us all closer together so that we can get to know each other. Again, I am a firm believer that there is safety in numbers when it comes to riding these Midwest roads.
If you haven't already seen the website, please take a moment to check it out. It's still a work in progress, and I need more people to interact to make it a success. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know. You can comment right here on this blog post.
Thanks for taking the time to check out Midwest Cycling. I promise to work hard to keep this community site updated and full of all things cycling in the Midwest. Once things get back to normal, there will be a calendar page filled with cycling events and group rides.
Here's to growing our community and enjoying the ride!
